Jan Hoel

Mr. Hoel holds an M.Phil. in modern languages (Nordic, English, Spanish) from the University of Oslo.
He has worked as a university lector abroad, in-house translator, text revisor and head of EU translations in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is employed at the Language Council as from 2000. In 1991 he worked for the Council of the European Union in Brussels as a lawyer-linguist.
 
He is a member of the steering group of the Nordic terminology forum Nordterm since 2003 and headed the group in 2005‒2007. He is also a member of the Board of the Nordic Association for Lexicology, NFL, where he was president in 2011‒2013. In 2009-2011 he headed the external steering group of Standards Norway’s project establishing the Internet-based termbank SNORRE.
 
His main professional interests are terminology and LSP, lexicography and language in society. He is in particular preoccupied with the contemporary impaired situation of national languages in higher education.
