Håvard Hjulstad

Håvard HjulstadHåvard Hjulstad was born in 1949 in Central Norway. He studied comparative and Germanic linguistics at the University of Oslo, and he has worked with dictionaries and terminology since the early 1970ies. He was involved in some of the earliest Norwegian "computational lexicography" projects, both on the linguistic and lexicographical side as well as on the systems development side. From 1979 to 1984 he was employed at the Norwegian Term Bank at the University of Bergen, where he developed computational methodologies for terminological tools.

In 1984, he joined the Norwegian Council for Technical Terminology (RTT) in Oslo, which he administered as director from 1990 to 2001. In addition, he worked from 1985 to 1992 as language consultant for the Norwegian Standards Association. From 2003 onward he has been working at Standards Norway as Project Manager in the fields of ICT standardization and terminology.

H. Hjulstad has been a member of ISO/TC 37 since about 1990. From 1992 to 1999, he was convenor of ISO/TC 37/SC 2/WG 3 Lexicography and editor of its project ISO 12199 (Alphabetical ordering of multilingual terminological and lexicographical data represented in the Latin alphabet). From 1998 to 2011, he was convenor of ISO/TC 37/SC 2/WG 1 “Language coding” and he has been one of the editors of ISO 639 (Codes for the representation of names of languages). From 1998 to 2009, he was Chair of the Technical Committee (ISO/TC 37) Terminology and other language and content resources.


H. Hjulstad was Vice-President of Infoterm from 2001 to 2009 and was awarded the Eugen Wüster Special Prize in 2006 for furthering terminology at national and international levels.
