Mariëtta Alberts holds a PhD and is an accredited terminologist.
She started her career in 1971 as a terminologist at the then Dept of National Education – now Dept Arts and Culture, South Africa. In 1982, she joined the Human Science Research Council (HSRC), where she did research in terminology, lexicography and computational linguistics, and returned in 1995 as Head, Systems Development and Research to the national terminology office (now Terminology Coordination Section (TCS)), National Language Service (NLS), Dept of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (DACST), at present Dept of Arts and Culture.
In October 2002, she started as Manager, Lexicography and Terminology Development at the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), where she administered the 11 National Lexicography Units (NLUs) and became Manager, Standardization and Terminology Development in 2004. Her present position is Director, Terminology Development.
M. Alberts has been for many years a part-time lecturer in Lexicography and Terminology at the Department of African Languages, University of Pretoria, and acts at present as external examiner for masters’ dissertations and doctoral theses for various South African Universities. She has trained the members of the National Languages Bodies (NLBs) and various language practitioners in the Principles and Practice of Terminology and Terminography.
She was one of the founder members of the African Association for Lexicography (Afrilex) in 1995 and has since been a member of its Executive Committee. President of Afrilex from 2004 to 2007, she is at present serving again as Secretary of Afrilex. In addition, she serves as Secretary on the Executive of the Centre for Legal Terminology in African Languages (CLTAL), of which she was a founder member in 1987. She has also served on the Executive Committee of the South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) for 22 years.
M. Alberts was Vice-President of Infoterm from 2005 to 2009. She is a member of the Taalkommissie (Afrikaans standardizing body) on spelling and orthography and of the Afrikaans National Language Body, where she acts as convenor of the Technical Committee on Terminology and Lexicography.
