History of ISO/TC 37

The history of terminology standardization dates back millennia to the early beginnings of systematic public administration and scientific-technical development, which are unthinkable without clearly defined concepts. These concepts needed a name for being able to be communicated: a “term” (or other kind of designation).


Although the term “terminology” existed earlier, its broad use came along in the course of unification, standardization and harmonization activities. Therefore, the history of systematic and broad-scale terminology standardization can largely be subdivided into:
