The Technical Committee "Language and Terminology" of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TC 37) develops standards on terminology, natural language processing, translation, interpreting, and other language-based activities in the multilingual information society. ISO/TC 37 was established in 1947 and initially focused on standards relating to terminology. Today, its mandate has been extended to the standardization of descriptions, resources, technologies, and services related to the economic, academic, or societal sectors.
ISO/TC 37 is one of nine committees at ISO that create horizontal standards for other ISO committees and for IEC, the International Electrotechnical Commission. ISO thus requires all its technical committees to follow ISO 704:2022 “Terminology work — Principles and methods“ and ISO 10241-12011 “Terminological entries in standards — Part 1: General requirements and examples of presentation when documenting terminology in ISO standards”.
In general, the application of ISO/TC 37 standards will help to
|
• enhance the overall quality of language resources in all subject fields; • improve information management within various industrial, technical, commercial, and scientific environments; • reduce its costs and increase efficiency in technical standardization and professional communication; • increase international trade by reducing language barriers through the provision of professional language services; • leverage language resources to deliver content- mining solutions that have global impact, such as reducing global health risks and protecting the environment. |
